FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP CHAMBER OF COMMERCE HOSTS

AMERICAN RED CROSS

FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

AT THE NEWLY RENOVATED CROWNE PLAZA OF SOMERSET

NO BUSINESS SHOULD RISK OPERATING WITHOUT A DISASTER PLAN

On September 24th, Franklin Township Chamber held an educational networking event for the business community.  Event Chair & Chamber Past President, Ryck Suydam, introduced the guest speakers, Gary Howarth, Coordinator of Franklin Township’s Office of Emergency Management, Diane Concannon, Public Relations Director of the American Red Cross, Amy Sutton, Red Cross CEO for Greater Somerset County, Michelle Dein, Red Cross Community Development Relationship Manager & Jesse Lazarus, Red Cross Volunteer.

We feel it’s important that the businesses of Franklin Township are prepared for possible disasters and other emergencies. Disasters can strike suddenly, at anytime and anywhere.  Everyone believes “it won’t happen to me”…But it can and does happen and businesses should be prepared for the unthinkable.

Coordinator Howarth said “Franklin Township is dedicated to the protection to all residents of the Township and will continue to provide the necessary planning to ensure that the Township is ready for the next emergency”. He explained how Franklin Township’s Office of Emergency Management (OEM) maintains a disciplined unit of emergency management personnel, including responders, planners, watch commanders, administrative and support staff to identify and respond to disasters. Franklin Township’s OEM plans & prepares for emergencies, educates the public about preparedness and coordinates emergency and response and recovery. Franklin Township OEM is designed to help residents and businesses to better prepare for all types of emergencies, from hurricanes, to utilities disruption to terrorist attacks. Their motto is “Always Planning, Always Ready for the Unexpected”

Our Chamber members are encouraged to obtain a copy of the Emergency Management Guide for Business & Industry from the Red Cross. The American Red Cross of Central New Jersey offers a wide array of volunteer opportunities.

“The American Red Cross appreciates the Chamber’s attention to the importance of disaster preparedness,” said Diane Concannon, spokesperson, American Red Cross of Central New Jersey.  “We hope the information presented this evening helps members to Get A Kit, Make A Plan, and Be Informed.”

WELCOMES NEW BOARD MEMBERS

The Board of Directors is the legal representative of the Chamber. Its role is to plan, make decisions and policies and set objectives for the Chamber on behalf of the membership.

Franklin Township Chamber of Commerce Board Directors are chosen because of their interest in the Chamber of Commerce, their standing in the community and their experience and ability in civic affairs.

Nicole Costa, Branch Manager, Pinnacle Federal Credit Union

Nicole Costa joined Pinnacle Federal Credit Union as Branch Manager in August of 2008. Previously, she was Branch Manager for Darien Rowayton Bank in Rowayton, CT. Scott’s professional career has revolved around radio – both behind the mic and in the front office. In 1979, while still in college, Scott began broadcasting with Bruce “Cousin Brucie” Morrow and helped his company – Sillerman Morrow Broadcast Group – put two stations on the air in Randolph, New Jersey and Poughkeepsie, NY. In 1983, Scott re-located to Somerset to join Greater Media’s WMGQ-FM where he spent 11 years on the air. In 1994, Scott joined WAWZ-FM, Zarephath to do the morning show, providing the station’s evangelical Christian radio audience with a blend of contemporary Christian music, news, information and inspiration. In 2003 Scott ended a 24-year run on-the-air and became Station Manager.

Scott currently serves on the Executive Board of the New Jersey Broadcasters Association, and is a Consultant for the Pillar of Fire station in Cincinnati, Ohio. During his tenure at WAWZ Scott has seen the station’s audience grow from 137,000 to 672,000 listeners each week. WAWZ has been recognized by the National Association of Broadcasters with a Crystal Award for Community Service, and by the National Religious Broadcasters as Station of the Year in 1996, 2007 and 2008.

Scott’s family – his wife Marge and daughter Anna – reside in Parsippany, NJ. Though he is a Morris County resident Scott is genuinely appreciative of the last 26 years working in and around Franklin Township, and looks forward with eager anticipation to serving along with the other members of the Franklin Township Board.

Steve’s interests are varied and many. He volunteers at the NJ State Supreme Court in Somerville & spends spare time fishing, golfing, woodworking and canoeing.  He also volunteers at a local soup kitchen, the American Red Cross, the Raptor Trust, and the Special Olympics.  Steve also is a member of the Raritan Millstone-Heritage Alliance in Somerset County and sits on their Board as well.

A MESSAGE FROM THE FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP

OFFICE OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

CERT Program:

During his 2002 State of the Union Address, President Bush asked Americans to volunteer their services in order to improve and safeguard their country. Harnessing the spirit of cooperation that developed as a result of the tragic events of September 11th, he created the Citizen Corps Program to organize volunteer services in the areas of crime, natural disasters and terrorism. The Community Emergency Response Team or (CERT) is a part of the Citizen Corps Program.

If you join a CERT, you will receive basic-level training in the following areas:

Basic First Aid

Family Disaster Preparedness

Disaster Fire Suppression

Medical Operations

CERT Operations

Disaster Mental Health

Basic Emergency Management

Disaster Simulation -- Skills Review

Total training is usually about 18 hours, scheduled in 2-4 hour modules, over a period of weeks or months, in order to address the scheduling needs of team members.

If you are an individual looking to join a local CERT Team, contact your municipal emergency management coordinator.
